Accessible PDFs from

D2L & Canvas

For instructions, weekly modules, and short readings, an LMS page beats a PDF for accessibility and flexibility.

Prefer pages over files

  • Write instructions, policies, and weekly content as D2L/Canvas HTML pages, not attachments.
  • Use the editor’s heading styles, lists, and table headers.
  • Run the built-in accessibility checker while editing — it checks headings, contrast, alt text, and tables.

When you upload files

  1. Make the file accessible before uploading — LMS checkers do not inspect uploaded PDFs or Office documents.
  2. When students need an offline or printable copy, upload a properly exported tagged PDF or the accessible source document.

Then verify the result

Upload the exported PDF to our Tagged PDF Builder for an instant accessibility preflight — tags, alt text, and structure — and fix anything it flags.
